Tractors; a guide to buying the right machine

When buying a used tractor it is important to choose the most suitable machine for your specific requirements. In order to help with your decision we have summarised the key considerations below;

  • Manual or hydrostatic transmission; manual transmission is suitable for more evenly paced work whereas hydrostatic transmission (HST) is suitable for more variable work as it offers simple speed adjustments during work.

  • Operator cabin; cab or rollover protective structure (ROPS). Consider whether you'll need to operate your tractor within a cab or whether ROPS is more suitable.

  • Tyres; agricultural, industrial, or turf. The type of work that you are doing will influence the type of tyres required. Agricultural tyres are generally used for farming work, industrial tyres are designed for hard surfaces and turf tyres are designed for turf and groundcare.

  • Tractor attachments; you will also need to consider what additional attachments your tractor will require as this will further influence your choice of machine. There are many different attachments available for tractors including backhoes, buckets, chippers, hedge cutters, pallet tines, loaders, mowers, rollers, seeders, snow ploughs, sprayers, and trailers. Please make sure that your tractor can accomodate all attachments that you may require.
